Do You Need a Separate Zanzibar Visa? Entry and Insurance Rules

No second Tanzania visa is needed just because a continuous trip includes both the mainland and Zanzibar. The official eVisa portal covers both. Visa eligibility still depends on your passport and purpose of travel.
An insurance certificate is a different document. Do not buy a second visa because an island-arrival checklist asks for insurance.
Which destination and entry point go on the form?
Use your real first destination and the point where you enter Tanzania, rather than the last hotel on the itinerary.

For an international sea arrival or a land crossing, check the actual designated entry point in the entry-points guide. A Dar–Zanzibar ferry after entry at DAR is not a fresh international arrival.
A JRO–safari–ZNZ itinerary stays within Tanzania. A JRO–Kenya–ZNZ itinerary crosses an international border. For the second pattern, check the visa's re-entry conditions and Kenya's requirements rather than relying on the domestic-transfer example.
Inbound insurance: the October 2026 clarification
Zanzibar Insurance Corporation's notice dated 7 October 2026 says the insurance channel depends on the first entry:
- Zanzibar first: use the ZIC inbound portal.
- Mainland first: use the NIC inbound portal.
The notice addresses avoiding duplicate insurance for a journey covering both places. Keep the applicable valid policy certificate and QR code; do not automatically purchase a second policy for the domestic transfer. Its exemption guidance distinguishes mainland requirements from Zanzibar requirements.

Documents for a safari and beach holiday
Keep these together but clearly labeled:
- Passport and Tanzania visa approval, if your nationality needs a visa.
- International return or onward booking.
- Safari, accommodation and domestic-transfer confirmations.
- The applicable inbound insurance certificate and QR code.
For a family, check each traveler's visa and insurance position separately. One adult's reference does not cover everyone. Keep offline copies so the documents are available without airport Wi-Fi.

Questions that often cause duplicate purchases
I only visit Zanzibar. Is a mainland visa required?
The relevant visa is a Tanzania visa. You do not buy a mainland product and an island product separately. Check whether your passport needs a visa, then list Zanzibar as the first destination when that is the itinerary.
Does a Kenya authorization cover Zanzibar?
No. It relates to entry to Kenya. Check Tanzania permission separately before a Kenya–Zanzibar flight.
I leave Tanzania and return during the holiday. Is one visa enough?
That depends on the visa category, validity and re-entry conditions. A domestic mainland–Zanzibar example cannot answer an international re-entry question. Confirm with Immigration before booking the return leg.
Does visa exemption also mean insurance exemption?
Do not infer one from the other. They are separate requirements with separate eligibility rules.
